“If you’re hanging around with nothing to do and the zoo is closed, come over to the Senate. You’ll get the same kind of feeling and you won’t have to pay.”

Inappropriate to be sure but the reaction to this is quite disturbing.
First of all, why is Michael Hancock receiving nasty emails? What did he do? Oh, right – he’s black too so surely he was involved. What sort of bigots do we have living in this state? Go read the comments at the end of the Rocky Mountain News article for a taste.
Second of all, I’m glad Charlie Brown was able to tear himself away from his barstool long enough to get his name in the paper with his typically sensible take on the issue. His “outrage” is certainly not helping the situation at all. Dial it back a notch Charlie, it’s not that big of a deal, you’re embarrassing yourself.
The comments at the Rocky and Post are always filled with garbage. I think there must be some people who get drunk before posting there (I’m sure nobody at Pols does that ;).
But, I know it made FreeRepublic. I haven’t been back to the Rocky or Post this morning to check the comments, but I wouldn’t be shocked if there’s a bunch of comments from people registered today expressing their Internet anger.
It was surely a poor choice by the singer, but the sentiments expressed in the lyrics of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” are not far from those expressed by “The Star Spangled Banner”. The triumph of liberty is at the core of both of those songs.
If she wanted to sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, she should have sung “The Star Spangled Banner” first, then introduced her setting of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with something about how this is another song that expresses her love for her country, or whatever. It could have been performed and probably received well without the kerfuffle.

If she had asked to do that I don’t see Hickenlooper telling her no. What she did do was inappropriate, and, given where she did it, is going to make news.
Totally agree with you, I’ve blogged about how bad they are before. They are particularly bad today though and are now combined with email attacks on Michael Hancock. People need to get a grip. It was inappropriate but the fits of racial pique are truly disturbing.
I like the idea of introducing “Lift Every Voice” after the Anthem. Explaining a little of the history and then singing it. Then it could have been a learning experience instead of an excuse for racial/political posturing.
I’ve been to events where they sing America the Beautiful instead of the Star Spangled Banner and everyone thinks that’s fine.
When I heard she had done this (before there was any hue & cry) I thouught it was really cool. I didn’t think anything of what she picked, I just thought it was cool she got to sing there and it’s a pretty song.
Every day they have to find something to be upset about. If it wasn’t this, they would make a mountain out of some other molehill.
“America the Beautiful” wouldn’t have conveyed her agenda, which was offensive and inappropriate in that venue. The anthem is supposed to speak for all of us, from all generations. It’s not a partisan or special-interest platform.
Now, that said, big deal. What is anyone going to do about this? Nothing. She committed no crime, and has a right to have her views, whatever they are. Its unfortunate that the event activated the moron gene on the News message boards, but it’s not surprising.
If I was given the chance and the honor to sing the National Anthem at that type of venue, I wouldn’t decide to switch songs and purposely avoid telling anyone, until after the fact.
The song itself, that she sang, is quite lovely. It was in our hymnal when I was younger, at our Methodist church. Great song. Just needed to ask before singing it.
I can see both sides of that. If you ask and get a yes – that’s the best solution. But if you ask and get a no, then doing it anyways is a gigantic slap in the face so at that point you have to not do it.
I saw the news article in the other diary where she said that she purposely didn’t ask. I would hope that she would have been adult enough not to sing it if someone specifically refused her request, had she asked.
I wish she had asked because I think Hickenlooper would be open to it, don’t you? He seems like the kind of guy that would have been cool with her singing both.
Just sort of poor manners to behave the way she did.
If the Mayor had asked her to “come make a goofy political statement” instead of “sing the National Anthem” it would be totally appropriate.

She makes good points, but I can’t help but think she too is paying back a debt to Bill Armstrong.
Everything she talks about is true. And she didn’t even mention the testing of the voting machines, etc for which Mike has been blasted in the papers.
Why isn’t Coffman aware of these things? Or is he….

What more from Senator Obama’s past will return to haunt him between now and November?
ColoradoPolitical needs an .avi theme music file. Some Wagner, perhaps?
🙂
He/She’s wrong, just that some theme music might better capture the moment.
Will our lapel-pin-less crusader escape the wrath of the evil Dobby ?
Will the pant suit lady’s nefarious scheme foil his presidential plans ?
Stay tuned.
You mean to tell me that wealthy people get better rates on their loans than the rest of us!? I am outraged. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
If it was McCain his wife would have put the house on her Amex and then “forgotten” to pay the property taxes.
People with excellent credit ratings get better rates than “average”. It’s a crime!
“Nyahh hah haaahhh!”
.
Thanks, Amber.
Amber Glus, the Media Contact for the Jeff Crank campaign, just sent me an email
(actually, a press release entitled, “Jeff Crank ‘Walks the Walk’, and ‘Talks the Talk'”)
that helpfully points to a “nonpartisan” website where Congresswomen and men join together to solve the nation’s problems,
or at least sign pledges to promise to do something about the problems.
Mixed in with the names of over 100 Republican Congressional Representatives is that of one Democrat, Neil Abercrombie from Hawai’i.
You go, Jeff!
Reach across that aisle.
But what’s up with all the pledges ?
Can’t people take you at your word ?
.
That is major news. Usually he just keeps his lips attached to Inouye’s butt 24/7.
Abercrombie has never been close to Inouye. Inouye supported his primary opponent when he first ran and Abecrombie is far more liberal. Glad to see your ignorance extends to other states as well.
Glad everyone makes light of the Obama Buddy Brigade. Trust me you will be hearing a lot more about the kinds of deals Senator Obama made and the kinds of people he hung out with in Chicago.
I agree with you, but maybe you should switch to decaf. At least for a day, just to see what happens…
Considering his mom recently ran for office there…
I didn’t get this from her though. Abercrombie started off acting independently of Inouye but found it didn’t work that well and fell in line – big time.
